Description
Music about being hunted, escaping and finding oneself inarticulate in a foreign place, saying goodbye to homeland & loved ones forever, themes close to the hearts of many so-called ‘new arrivals’ today—how to be ‘here’ whilst also being very much from ‘there’. EXIT is inspired by Tania’s parent’s rich musical heritage and her father’s extraordinary defection story. In 1957, when the former Jugoslavia still lay behind the iron curtain, Rudy Bosak, a talented musician of Croatian descent, was interrogated by the leader of the Jedinstvo Društvo Ensemble as a possible defection risk. In spite of this, he was permitted to tour Belgium with the eighty member folkloric ensemble, twelve of whom were secret informers for the state. Despite the surveillance and atmosphere of mistrust, Rudy along with two of his fellow musicians Ante and Fanito, did manage to defect after the final performance.
